Rogue Community College Honors Olympian, Nursing Hero

Grants Pass, Ore. (Sept. 13, 2024) – Rogue Community College (RCC) proudly announces two honorees for the 2024 President’s Circle Dinner. The event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Vista 222 in the Applegate Valley. This event will highlight the achievements of Alum of the Year Jaida Ross and Citizen of the Year Helen Hanson, recognizing their outstanding contributions to RCC and the community.

Jaida Ross, a 2020 RCC graduate, was named Alum of the Year for exemplifying the spirit of academic and athletic excellence. Ross completed a college transfer degree as a dual credit student through Logos Public Charter School. After launching her college career at RCC, she transferred to the University of Oregon where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in prevention science. An accomplished track and field athlete, Ross recently competed in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, placing fourth in women’s shot put. She was also the 2024 NCAA Division I champion, becoming the first collegiate woman to break the 20-meter mark in shot put. Ross’s dedication to her sport and her academic pursuits makes her shine as a model of excellence for current and future RCC students.

Helen Hanson has been named RCC Citizen of the Year for her philanthropic work and dedication to the college’s nursing program. Hanson, who has a background in community colleges and nursing, has long recognized the need for skilled medical personnel in the Rogue Valley, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. After learning about increased clinical fees for nursing students, Hanson stepped up by providing a stipend to help cover those fees. Hanson’s commitment has made an impact on RCC’s nursing program and the local healthcare community.

“Honoring these two individuals highlights the incredible impact that education and community involvement can have,” said RCC President Randy Weber. “Jaida and Helen represent what it means to embody the values of Rogue Community College, whether it’s through athletic and academic achievement or by selflessly giving back to the community.”

The President’s Circle Dinner reflects RCC’s ongoing commitment to recognizing those who help build a stronger, more resilient community. The college remains dedicated to fostering growth and opportunity, and this event underscores its role in shaping the future.
