About Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded to a month-long celebration by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The dates coincide with the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua on Sept. 15, Mexico on Sept. 16 and Chile on Sept. 18.
Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla, not Mexican independence.
