October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

On college campuses, Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) plays a crucial role in educating students, faculty and staff about domestic violence, intimate partner violence (IPV) and relationship abuse. College students, particularly those aged 18-24, are vulnerable to relationship violence, including emotional abuse, coercive control and physical assault.

This year’s theme, “Heal, Hold & Center,” focuses on collective healing, holding space for survivors and centering marginalized communities in the fight against domestic violence. The Domestic Violence Awareness Project emphasizes that “there is no survivor justice without racial justice,” highlighting the need to support those facing anti-Blackness and other forms of oppression.

RCC Counseling invites the campus community to join both virtual and in-person events throughout October. These events aim to foster community, raise awareness and support survivors.

Upcoming In-Person Events:

Voting Event
Wednesday, Oct. 9, 12-2 p.m., Wiseman Center at RWC
Julia Fisher will be tabling at a voting event hosted by AZP and the League of Women Voters. Stop by to chat, learn about resources and discover hidden barriers to voting for those in abusive relationships.

Club Fair with ASG
Tuesday, Oct. 22, 12-2 p.m., Student Center at RWC
Meet Julia Fisher at the Club Fair for information on domestic violence resources and support services.

Silent Witness Project
All campuses, throughout October
Red silhouette cutouts will be displayed across all three campuses in honor of those lost to domestic violence. Each silhouette features a QR code linking to victim stories, serving as a reminder of the human cost of intimate partner violence. The project encourages reflection, conversation and action.

Additionally, currently enrolled students can win a $25 gift card by participating in media events via the RCC campus app, courtesy of Associated Student Government.

Join us this October as we heal, hold and center survivors and work toward lasting change.
