As Cybersecurity Awareness Month continues, it’s crucial to focus on one of the key defenses for personal and institutional data: password management. Weak passwords can lead to compromised accounts, data breaches and unauthorized access to sensitive information.
Why Strong Passwords Matter
Passwords protect your email, financial data and sensitive accounts. A weak password can result in identity theft, data loss or unauthorized access to RCC’s systems, putting personal and institutional information at risk.
Best Practices for Password Security:
- Create Complex Passwords:
Use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols to make passwords harder to guess. Avoid obvious choices like your name, birthday, “123456” or “password.” - Aim for Length:
Passwords should be at least 12 characters long. Consider using a passphrase, which is easier to remember and still secure. For example, “BlueSky!29isGreat” is much harder to crack than a random word. - Use Unique Passwords for Each Account:
Never reuse passwords across accounts. If one account is compromised, all others are at risk. - Change Passwords Regularly:
Change your passwords at least every six months to minimize risk if a password is compromised without your knowledge. - Never Share Your Password:
No one should ask for your password—not supervisors, IT or official departments. If they do, it’s a red flag. - Consider a Password Manager:
Password managers securely generate, store and autofill strong, unique passwords for all your accounts.
What You Can Do Today:
- Check your passwords: Are they strong and secure?
- Regularly review and update passwords.
Remember: Passwords are personal—never share them. By following these steps, you’ll help protect RCC and its digital environment.
