As we reach the halfway point of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, it’s important to highlight a major threat: phishing emails. These deceptive messages aim to steal sensitive information, such as passwords or financial details and falling for one can lead to identity theft or unauthorized access to our systems.
Key Tips for Staying Safe
- Verify the Sender: Phishing emails often come from addresses with subtle errors. Double-check the sender’s details before clicking anything.
- Be Wary of Attachments: Be cautious with unexpected attachments, especially from unknown senders.
- Watch for Urgency or Odd Requests: Phishing emails often try to create urgency. If something feels off, slow down and double-check.
What to Do if You Encounter a Suspicious Email
- Report It: Use the Sophos Report button or forward the email to ThreatReport@roguecc.edu.
- Delete It: After reporting, delete the email from your inbox.
Looking Ahead: RCC IT will continue monthly phishing training campaigns with realistic emails based on website data, providing everyone a chance to practice in a safe environment. By staying informed and vigilant, we can protect our community from evolving cyber threats.
