- What Does It Mean To “Win” An Argument? – How can we argue in good faith? How can we communicate with confidence? How can we uncover new ideas by engaging in debate? Journalist, broadcaster and best-selling author Mehdi Hasan has made a career out of doing just that. In this conversation, Open to Debate host John Donvan discusses with Hasan the tricks of the trade, the fun of debating and how to root out truths through argument (49 minutes).
- Is Social Media Bad For Kids’ Mental Health? A Debate – Social media platforms have become integral to modern life in the 21st century, shaping how young people connect and communicate with the world around them. Their impact on children’s mental health has raised many concerns. Some argue that excessive social media usage can undermine adolescents’ self-esteem and body image. Defenders of social media argue that when used responsibly and with proper guidance, social media can enhance social and creative skills and help young people access valuable educational resources.
- Is The Banking System Safer Than It Was In 2008? A Debate – When the Great Recession struck in 2008, it marked the most significant economic downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Federal authorities moved swiftly to prop up struggling banks and Congress enacted a series of reforms aimed at preventing such a calamity from recurring. Today, the global banking system may be facing its most serious crisis since 2008. Observers wonder if the global economy is again approaching a recession. A combination of factors, including the erosion of regulations, sharp interest rate hikes and a volatile cryptocurrency landscape, has raised new questions about the scale of turmoil that could confront markets worldwide.
