As we officially kick off election season this week with the Oregon Primary, it’s a good time to revisit ORS 260.432, Restrictions on Political Campaigning by Public Employees.
This statute states that a public employee* may not, while on the job during working hours, promote or oppose election petitions, candidates, political committees or ballot measures. Additionally, no person—including elected officials—may require a public employee to do so.
You can find a comprehensive guide to this policy on the Oregon Secretary of State website as well as a quick reference flyer.
*A “public employee” includes public officials who are not elected, whether they are paid or unpaid.
