JACKSON and JOSEPHINE COUNTIES, Ore. (Nov. 13, 2024) – The Rogue Community College (RCC) Emergency Services Department has added two new programs to its lineup: the Advanced Emergency Care Certificate of Completion and the Emergency Services Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. These programs provide advanced training for emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and people looking to advance their careers in emergency medical services.
“The new programs significantly reduce time to completion for students seeking to become paramedics by removing barriers and focusing on courses that prepare students for a career in paramedic care and emergency medical services,” said Rusty Riis, faculty chair of the RCC Emergency Services Department. “Our Advanced Emergency Care Certificate equips EMTs with paramedic-level skills, while the Emergency Services AAS program offers a comprehensive pathway for those seeking paramedic licensure and education in a two-year program.”
The Advanced Emergency Care certificate is a four-term program designed for EMTs with an associate degree or higher. It is focused on appreciating students’ prior degrees and experience, streamlining their focus on paramedic care and reducing their time to complete the program.
“This certificate allows students to avoid starting from scratch. We can now focus their time on EMT and paramedic education and simply bridge the knowledge gap needed from their prior education into the unique facets of paramedic care,” said Riis.
The Emergency Services AAS degree provides extensive training, starting with EMT certification and progressing to paramedic education. Graduates qualify to sit for the National Registry Paramedic Certification Examination, opening doors to leadership roles in EMS and fire services and meeting the evolving needs and demands for paramedic providers in our region.
In a post-COVID world where EMTs and paramedics exited the workforce, this is a new path to help aspiring paramedics advance their career. While reducing time to program completion, it maintains the high-quality education our community expects for its responding paramedics.
