This is part of an ongoing series about RCC’s new Teaching and Learning Framework.
Great teaching doesn’t start when you walk into the classroom—it starts long before, with thoughtful preparation and planning. This week, we’re highlighting Instructional Planning and Design, a core area of our Teaching and Learning Framework.
What is instructional planning and design?
At its heart, this focus area is all about planning with intentionality. It involves:
- Planning at multiple levels: From long-range course planning to detailed lesson design.
- Aligning with outcomes: Ensuring every learning experience is designed to guide students toward achieving their goals.
In other words, it’s the behind-the-scenes work that lays the groundwork for successful teaching and learning.
Why does instructional planning and design matter?
Designing meaningful learning experiences isn’t just about covering topics. It’s about being intentional—choosing strategies, materials and assessments that make learning engaging and aligned with outcomes. While this might sound daunting, there are proven frameworks and tools to simplify and enhance the process.
Where can you start?
Start small by reflecting on your current planning process:
- Identify your strengths and growth areas: Our self-reflection rubric can help you identify the gaps between where you are and where you want to be.
- Try something new: The Instructional Planning and Design playbook is full of practical tools and strategies to guide your work and spark fresh ideas.
