Haley Martin Sherman has joined the RCC Humanities department as a full-time faculty member. Sherman grew up on a cattle ranch in rural Northern California and spent much of her time imagining adventures in Narnia, the Shire and Hogwarts. Initially pursuing a law career at California State University, Chico, Haley’s interests changed after enrolling in a pedagogy course at the recommendation of her English professor. This course led her to discover her passion for teaching and a desire to pursue a career in English education at the college level. Sherman earned a Master of Fine Arts from Mills College and a Master of Arts in teaching from Southern Oregon University.
She has been teaching since 2014, working with students ranging from ages 13 to 77, and has been an adjunct professor at RCC since 2018. In addition to teaching, she mentors new prospective teachers in the MAT program and is involved with the nonprofit Teach from Your Best Self, researching how student achievement correlates with teacher well-being. Her research is set to be published in the fall 2024 issue of Holistic Education Review.
Outside of her work, Sherman enjoys reading about travel, food, art, design and parenting. Currently, she reads more books than ever to her two young children, favoring those under 10 pages and made of cardboard.
